List your CafePress products in Google Product Search (aka Froogle) in five easy(ish) steps:
-
Make sure you know your CafePress account email address and Account ID. (more info)
Your CafePress email address is the email address you use at CafePress when managing your shop. Simple, huh?
Your CafePress Account ID is available from the CafePress Your Account page.
- Sign in to CafePress.
- Your Account ID is visible at the top right of the Your Account page, next to the "member since" date.
-
Download your product feed.
-
Sign up for a Google Account. (more info)
You may already have a Google Account. If you use Gmail, Google Adwords, or any other Google service, you already have a Google Account, and should continue to #4.
If you're positive you don't already have a Google Account, you can sign up for a free account at the Google Accounts sign-up page.
-
Register your shop with Google Base. (more info)
Google Base is a little tricky, but follow these instructions and you should be okay:
- Sign in to Google Base with your Google Account.
- Accept the Google Base Terms of Service.
- Skip the form, and click the "Post multiple items with a bulk upload file" link.
- Click the "New Bulk upload" button.
-
Setup your business details:
- Enter the name of your business or store into the Display name field.
- Fill in the Description field if you want.
- Enter your CafePress shop URL into the Website URL field: http://www.cafepress.com/yourshopid
- Click "Next" to continue.
-
Specify your feed settings:
- Enter a file name for your feed. I recommend you enter [yourstoreid]_google.txt, meaning if your store ID was
"lovestore" then you'd enter "lovestore_google.txt", without the quotes.
- Choose "Products" from the Item type list.
- Click the "Register bulk upload file and continue to formatting instructions" button.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the "I'm done formatting my file. Continue to upload >" button.
-
Upload your feed to Google Base. (more info)
-
If you didn't just sign up for Google Base then you'll need to sign in:
- Sign in to Google Base with your Google Account.
- Click the "Bulk upload files" link near the top of the page.
- Click the "upload file" link next to the Bulk upload file you registered earlier.
- Browse and find the feed file you downloaded earlier. (The link you were emailed.) Then click the "Upload and process this file" button.
- Uploading might take a while -- feed files can be pretty big.
- When the file has finished uploading, Google will take somewhere between a few minutes and a few days to actually process the file. Just check back occasionally, to see if it's done yet.
- Two important notes on your feed:
- If your feed file is bigger than 20MB, you'll have to FTP the file. Check out the FTP information on the right side of the bulk uploads page.
- Google requires you reupload your feed at least once every 30 days. I recommend doing it every 21 days, just in case there's a delay in processing.
Feed notes:
- last data update: February 2, 2008
- Links point to product pages within the shop.
- Each shop gets its own feed file.
- There's a special tracking PID in each link. This PID is for CafePress' internal
tracking purposes only, and will NOT generate an affiliate commission. These are not affiliate links.
- I'm requiring email information to prevent people from downloading other people's feeds.
- Requests are processed in a queue. You'll be emailed the link to your feed when it's ready (which should only take a few minutes, but "should" doesn't always mean "will").
- This first version of the feed deals only with products that have a front image. Products that only have a back image won't appear. Maybe next time.
- Note: This is a free service right now, but I reserve the right to charge for it someday. (So enjoy it while you can.)
